What Are We Doing Here?

The purpose of this site is to give full expression of my faith in Jesus Christ as Risen Lord and Savior.  Since I have been given the gift of faith in God and His son, Jesus the Christ I feel compelled to respond with gratitude.  All of us should seek to do good works, not in order to gain salvation, but because we have been given salvation as a free gift.

Therefore, as with all God’s children, I will seek to, as feebly, as I can, to do what I can in furtherance of God’s Kingdom.  To that end I focus on two areas of concern: peace and stewardship.

The focus on peace is critical.  All that God desires for His children is wrapped up in furthering peace and ending violence among and between humanity.  This is of primary concern.  All that we could ever hope to accomplish in God’s world depends upon nonviolence.  The command to love God and love your neighbor, as well as the New Commandment given at the Last Supper to love one another the way that God loves us puts this effort front and center.  In a world of war and under the constant threat of nuclear destruction the only battle worth waging is the battle for peace.

The second area of focus is stewardship.  This is simply because I have an extensive background in financial services and retirement planning.  I know the intricacies of this world; I understand the pitfalls and traps and I can identify the opportunities.  I, by virtue of my past, can help people succeed in this area, and it is my firm conviction that God wants us to use all our human experience to further His mission.Stay up-to-date

Meet Tom Cleary: The man behind "Believe and Obey"

Since July of 2017 Tom Cleary has been writing weekly essays at this website believeandobey.net.  In this role he has covered many topics, such as scriptural commentary, various contemporary faith topics and public policy issues from a radical Christian perspective.  He has gained a dedicated following of those who wish to hear God’s good and gracious word proclaimed in today’s world.  This writing effort is the product of over 20 years of scriptural study, both self-taught and under the tutelage of his pastors.

The author also brings real world experience to his writing craft as for over 25 years he has had a series of sales and sales management roles in industries as diverse as coffee, financial services, and medical supplies.  This perspective brings a street level realism to his writing that infuses his work with a very accessible freshness.

Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska in the Catholic tradition, Tom went from faith to unbelief and back again after finally understanding what it is that God is saying to all of us.  Married since 1994, Tom still resides in Omaha and is the father of two grown children, and worships in the Lutheran tradition.
